Drive-Ins + Vintage Motels
A couple weekends back, Chris and I got out of the city and drove a few hours north to celebrate me finishing my program at Integrative Nutrition. We knew we were going to the drive-in that night (the only time its worth seeing a mainstream movie) but didn't know where we were going to stay. I was hoping for a cute vintage motel but after a few failed calls (out of service or booked up) I knew I'd be happy with something clean. As luck would have it, we drove past a sign for "The Astoria Motor Lodge". We turned up the driveway to a scattered bunch of cute vintage rooms and they even had a pool! Perfect!
After deciding on the 10:30 movie, (the Heat) we had enough time to put our stuff down, jump in the pool for an hour and get food on the way to the drive-in.
I went to my first drive in last summer (with Chris) and it looks like it's going to become an annual summer tradition. There's something about a drive in that makes any movie better. Maybe it's the mix of couples and families, or the salty popcorn, but there's something real and timeless about them.
The next day we went to The Saugerties Lighthouse. We made it just in time for the last tour. It's amazing the history that this place holds. Talk about "it takes a village" If you're in the area definitely check it out. Along with the historical aspect, it's also a bed and breakfast. (next time) There's also a nice lake and picnic area, as well as a slightly hidden spot with benches for fishing or relaxing.
Where have you explored this summer? Any new discoveries?
